Hello! So, I went to the midnight premiere of The Great Gatsby last night with a few girls from work. We went to the AMC Dine-in theater and that was absolutely fantastic and the food was delicious. But I digress, I completely adored this movie, on the borderline of obsession! Let’s get started!
First off, two of my favorite actors/actresses are in this film: Carey Mulligan and Leonardo di Caprio. They both did such an amazing job with this film. It was nice to see Leo so reserved and Carey so eccentric. Isla Fisher and Tobey Maguire surprised me. I wasn’t expecting them to portray the character poorly, but I didn’t think they’d exceed my expectations. All of the actors/actresses were on point—especially with the way this film was edited.
Speaking of editing, I thought it was great how they sped the tempo a bit during party scenes or driving scenes and the other extraneous scenes. It added a quirky but mysterious vibe to the movie. The coloring was vivid and that just made all of the costumes and set designs pop in elegance. The designers did a perfect job making a 1920s environment and sticking to the exact map specifications of all of the settings in the novel.
Music. Now, this was one of the most controversial portions of the film that I’ve read about. In my deep and honest opinion, I believed it was very innovative for the creators to give the period drama a modern edge. The songs still fit into the sequences and blended with the age-old music in very fluent manners. Even the rap songs by Jay-Z were a perfect match. This film has been created about two to three times before, so why not spice it up and leave a piece of tradition behind? The soundtrack is simply perfection; if you haven’t heard it, please do—whether you’ve seen the film or not.
Overall, the film stuck to the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald very well. I will most likely re-read the novel again but I don’t think the film left out any important aspects of the book. I really want to see this movie again—over and over and over. I give this film 10 out of 10.
